Hello, my name is Jorge Macias. I am a T7 paraplegic injured in 2017. The first year of my injury I didn’t really want to do anything. I just stayed in my room and watched TV. I had heard of BORP, but was not interested until about late 2018 when I first tried wheelchair basketball at BORP. I went in there, thinking I was not going to have fun and that it was going to be super easy. Wheelchair basketball was so fun! I fell in love with how, when it got flowing, it looked like dance or an art piece. And, of course, the team I played with was awesome so I had to keep coming back! Fast forward to 2023 and I am now the program associate at BORP running the adult basketball team. We would love to have you join in!

Wheelchair basketball is a fast-paced team sport that challenges participants to improve their fitness, refine their skills, and have a lot of fun in the process. Participants often forge lasting friendships and make strong connections with the larger BORP community.Anyone with a lower limb disability is encouraged to join us, regardless of athletic experience or skill. The program is mixed gender, supportive, and welcoming.

BORP’s basketball program meets weekly at 6pm in Berkeley. Weekly, on Monday evenings at 6:00pm Berkeley Adult School Gym 2100 Browning Street, Berkeley, CA 94702 Contact Brandon Young at brandon@borp.org or 510-225-7032.

BORP Adaptive Sports and Recreation is a community-defined organization since 1975, created and sustained by and for people with disabilities. We offer extensive programming that includes team sports, virtual and in person fitness programs, accessible cycling and kayaking, and arts and recreation outings. BORP fosters healthy exercise, independence and empowerment, human connection, and belonging to youth and adults with disabilities throughout the Bay Area and beyond.

@snicholst89 Check out Adaptive Sports & Recreation Association. I think they have basketball in the San Diego area.

I don’t see many basketball options close to you. BORP is the closest but it’s still a pretty far drive. Central California Adaptive Sports Center has some other sport/recreational options you might enjoy.
